She has marveled at the spirit, courage, and beauty of Josephine Baker for a long time. She has been a mentor for a WNDB nonfiction writer and SCBWI-MI writer of diversity. Patricia Hruby Powell danced throughout the Americas and Europe with her dance company, One Plus One, before becoming a writer of children’s books. She has plans for picture book about Ella Baker (Simon & Schuster) and a YA about women who championed women’s suffrage (Chronicle 2020). Virginia (Chronicle 2017) for young adults is a Junior Library Guild Selection for 2017 and her middle grade nonfiction Struttin’ With Some Barbecue will be published this year (2018). Her other picture books are Blossom Tales, Zinnia, and Frog Brings Rain.
